Ascending into the San Bernardino National Forest along Knickerbocker Road, the bird-watching and valley views only get better and better. Beginning at the base of Forest Road 2N08, 1 mile from Chirp Nature Center, this intermediate dirt road leads birders up to a spring-fed oasis tucked peacefully in the mountains. While on the Knickerbocker Trail, be on the lookout for woodpeckers, swallows, and Mountain Chickadees enjoying the view. To get to the oasis, take the side trail branching off to the right about .5 miles up 2N08. Especially in spring, the trail is dotted with wildflowers, an open invitation for hummingbirds to feast. Although it is an intermediate hike up to Knickerbocker Canyon, the birding and breathtaking views make it well worth the adventure.

Before starting, check any Forest Service road closures. Although it can still be hiked, the Knickerbocker Road is closed to vehicles during winter. Parking is limited at the base of the trail and an adventure pass is required if driving up and parking along 2N08.
