May Wild Bird Walk
This Event Has Ended
First Wild Bird Walk in Big Bear Lake, CA for the 2024 Summer Season
Join Chirp Nature Center as we kick off the first free & in-person wild bird-watching event of the 2024 season. Meeting at Chirp at 8AM on May 11th, 2024, this free educational wild bird walk will take you through the forest and along Big Bear Lake with stunning lakeshore views. While on this hour and a half walk, be on the lookout for swallows tumbling through the air, lake birds sunbathing just offshore, and jays calling from the trees.
During the walk, Chirp’s Wild Bird Guides will share unique local facts and give tips and tricks to enhance your bird identification skills. While our walks are leisurely paced, the conditions can vary by trail. If you’ve hiked on uneven terrain at altitude, then this walk should be comfortable for you. (Note that exact bird walk locations are determined immediately before the walk begins based on conditions and group size.)
After the walk, return to Chirp for complimentary donuts, and a raffle for special gifts. Wild birdwatchers of all levels and ages are welcome, so be sure to register free to secure a spot for this event.

Tips on How to Prepare
- Wear comfortable attire such as layered clothing, breathable pants/shorts, and walking shoes.
- Use a bird checklist. Chirp offers a free local Checklist for the Big Bear Valley and can provide printed copies with pens at Walk check-in. Also, consider creating an e-bird checklist.
- Take a camera or phone with a camera.
- Bring a pair of optics for a better view. Chirp offers binoculars and spotting scopes and is an authorized Nikon, Zeiss, and Vortex dealer. Shop optics online or try them out in-store.
- Carry your own water. Refillable water stations are not available during the hike. Weather in the San Bernardino Mountains can vary dramatically. Read more about preparing for Big Bear Lake’s variable weather.
- Wear Sunglasses or protective eyewear.
- Use sunblock as UV rays in altitude are stronger.
- Remember, Chirp also has basic gear for a bird walk in the woods should you need anything.
- For further questions, email us at or call us at (888)-412-4477.
