Join Chirp Nature Center for a free guided bird walk on September 12, 2026, led by birding expert Matthew Schreiner. Birders of all levels are welcome to take part in this fun morning outing and explore some of Big Bear Lake’s favorite birding areas.

Please register in advance so we know who to expect. Space is limited.

Participants should meet at Chirp between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. on the day of the walk. From there, we will carpool to the trail site. After the walk, we’ll return to Chirp for coffee and refreshments and a chance to talk about the birds we saw.

Trail location may vary depending on conditions and group size. Our walks are generally leisurely paced, but outdoor conditions and terrain can vary.

Tips on How to Prepare

  • Wear comfortable attire such as layered clothing, breathable pants or shorts, and walking shoes.
  • Bring a bird checklist if you’d like to keep track of what you see. Chirp offers a free local Checklist for the Big Bear Valley and may have printed copies available at check-in.
  • Take a camera or phone with a camera.
  • Bring binoculars or other optics if you have them.
  • Carry your own water, since refill stations may not be available during the walk.
  • Wear sunglasses or other protective eyewear.
  • Use sunblock, as UV exposure is stronger at altitude.
  • If you need basic gear for the walk, Chirp may have helpful items available in-store.
