Have you stopped by the Chirp store’s refillables station yet? It’s chockfull of carefully curated products that are locally sourced and sustainable. Made from natural, organic, non-GMO, and cruelty-free ingredients, our refillables are clean products without the harmful use of single-use plastics (which are quickly filling up our landfills and waterways). In this post, we’ll spotlight some of our refillable brands and the positive impact they have on our health and the world around us.
Alpine Provisions
This brand makes personal care products—find their body wash, deodorant, soap, toothpaste tablets, and more at Chirp—using the best that nature has to offer. Infused with sustainably sourced saps, essential oils, and flowers, everything is sustainable, organic, non-GMO, vegan, and cruelty free. And the brand itself donates 1% of every sale goes towards a scholarship fund at the Colorado Outward Bound School. The scholarship funds excursions for young adults, shaping conscious leaders of tomorrow for the benefit of our community and planet.
Blue Heron Botanicals
California-based brand Blue Heron Botanicals is serious about the environment—and about making seriously moisturizing, yummy-smelling, lip balms. (Stop by Chirp to pick one up!) With a short and sweet ingredients list (literally beeswax, coconut oil, vitamin E, and essential oils top the list), their lip balms are healing and naturally aromatic. Besides making great products, this woman-owned, sustainable brand also uses zero-waste packaging that is 100% compostable at home. (Yes, you read that right. Just throw the packaging into your kitchen or yard compost and it will degrade within 2 weeks.)
Hüppy
If you’re looking to take the plastic out of your morning routine, Hüppy toothpaste tablets are for you. Did you know that 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes are thrown away every year? And most of those end up in our landfills and waterways. Not so with Hüppy. Their toothpaste tablets, available at our refillables station, come in a recyclable, refillable tin. You can also buy refills with compostable packages! Their ingredients are free of everything you don’t want: cruelty to animals, sulfates, plastics, parabens, GMOs, and gluten. Headquartered right here in Southern California, Hüppy products are also locally made. Plus, they use 2% of their revenue to fund sustainability efforts. Grab some of their toothpaste tablets at the Chirp store.
Juniper Ridge
What started 26 years ago at a Berkley farmer’s market became a worldwide brand with Juniper Ridge. Their handcrafted body wash, bar soaps, and perfumes, available at Chirp, are free of preservatives, dyes, and other icky stuff. Even their packaging is made from Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) paper, meaning it comes from responsibly managed forests. A portion of each purchase goes to protecting our wild places. And at present, the brand has donated more than a quarter of a million dollars to this initiative!
Leaf Shave
Leaf Shave is more than just really cool razors—they’re committed to making more space in our landfills. And that begins with preventing an estimated 20 million plastic razors from filling them in the last five years. At Chirp, we love brands like Leaf, that we can get behind (which is why you’ll find their razors and refills in our store). The brand has even partnered with changeclimate.org, an organization that helps companies reduce their waste and carbon emissions. From their no-waste packaging to their recyclable materials (yes, even the blade), Leaf Shave razors are walking the walk of sustainability. And since opening their doors in 2019, they’ve already donated over $100,000 to conservation organizations like Bat Conservation International and Pollinator Partnership.
Rock Creek Soaps
With a “leave no trace” credo ensuring their products are sustainable and ethically sourced from nature, Rock Creek Soaps is a brand taking a stand. Yes, their “everything-free” (sulfate, paraben, you name it) skin care bars have amazingly colorful designs and smell even better. But the brand does more than make great bars of soap: they help the community. Partnering with the HER Campaign, which supports trafficked and abuse survivors, Rock Creek Soaps has created a line of soap bars with funds dedicated solely as donations for this nonprofit. You can find their lotion bars, soap bars, and shampoo and conditioner bars at Chirp.
The Chirp Brand Standard
At the Chirp Nature Center, we take our very own Sustainability Credo to heart. We make sure the products we carry are sustainable, equitable and inclusive, awe-inspiring, and fiscally fit. We carry those values to our Chirp brand of products, from our Big Bear Blend Wild Bird Seed to our bird-friendly coffee. Visit us at the Chirp store in Big Bear Lake and try out the Chirp brand—and all brands we carry—for yourself!
